Local Retailer Encourages Shoe Recycling
Boulder's PEDESTRIAN SHOPS originally opened as an Earth Shoe Store 33 years ago in 1970. The Earth Shoe was a funny looking, albeit comfortable Danish Shoe famous for its ‘negative heel' and oblique toe that was first introduced in the United States on the original Earth Day in the Spring of 1970.
To celebrate this year's EARTH DAY, the PEDESTRIAN SHOPS are again encouraging customers to recycle their shoes for people in need. The first 50 people who bring in a used pair of shoes will receive a free Earth Backpack-a $9.95 value. New and unloved or slightly used footwear may be dropped off at either the PEDESTRIAN SHOPS location at 1425 Pearl on Boulder's Downtown Mall or its location in the Village Shopping Center facing Folsom between Arapahoe and Canyon.
As an added incentive, from Friday April 11th through Sunday April 27th, customers bringing in a pair of recyclable men's, women's, or children's shoes will receive a 10% discount on any new pair of shoes, sandals, clogs, or hiking boots, including footwear already SALE PRICED. The PEDESTRIAN SHOPS donates the usable recycled footwear to the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, First Presbyterian Church's Deacon's Closet, and other local assistance organizations.
Richard Polk, owner of the PEDESTRIAN SHOPS said, "We appreciate our suppliers supporting our shoe drives; this year, Earth Footwear ( yes it's back ) donated five hundred dollars worth of Backpacks. During recent drives, Naot and Rieker Footwear donated over $30,000 worth of sample shoes."
The PEDESTRIAN SHOPS, a local retailer that features the World's Most Comfortable Brands of Shoes has been conducting annual Thanksgiving and Earth Day shoe drives for 14 years. Over 11,000 pairs of shoes have been recycled for people in need.
