Allstate, Urban Leadership step up to collect shoes for city's needy
The holiday season is quickly approaching and with it comes colder weather. This winter, hundreds of children in the Austin area may go without proper footwear. The Allstate Foundation and the Austin Urban Leadership Foundation want to help keep all the little feet in Austin warm this winter by collecting shoes through the annual Bottomless Closet Shoe Drive during the month of November.
Shoes of all sizes and styles will be collected at Austin-area Allstate agencies beginning Nov. 12. Collection bins will be at the agencies through the end of the month and will be collected at an all-day event Saturday, Dec. 1 at the HEB in Hancock Center.
The shoe drives aims to collect 3,500 pairs of new or gently used shoes that will benefit the Austin Housing Authority, Caritas of Austin, El Buen Samaritano, Mt. Sinai Hospital and the local Salvation Army.
"It's hard to imagine not having a decent pair of shoes to wear to work or not being able to afford a properly fitting pair of shoes for your child," Allstate agent Michael Walker says. "We hope to put thousands of pairs of shoes on the feet of men, women and children who are in need."
